How do you build a social platform?
Share
Spoiler alert: it’s fascinating. Come behind the curtain with us.
We are dedicated to the value of full transparency. Many organizations don’t pull back the curtain to show you everything going on behind the scenes - all the late nights, brainstorming sessions, and grind work.
Our mission is to build community. In community, every step of the journey is shared.
Last week, we released a video breaking down the process of founding a non-profit and building a social platform. We’ve learned a lot about this process, and we think it’s fascinating. In the spirit of community, we are devoted to sharing this journey with you.
Here’s what it takes.
1. THE IDEA
I love sacred sound communities - but it’s hard to find them if you don’t know where to look. Things aren’t much easier for community builders. It takes intense time and energy to weave outreach networks.
I knew a social platform would change the game. From 2023-2025, all of my free time was spent researching and brainstorming. I amassed pages of notes, figuring out how a platform would work, and if it had been tried before. It hadn’t.
2. THE OUTREACH
Last fall, I took those pages of notes and transformed them into our website, Welcome Zine, and social media. It was time to get the idea out and hear what people thought.
3. THE LISTENING
With the idea out in the world, we began listening. These days, a huge amount of our time is spent calling, messaging, and emailing members of the sacred sound community to hear their thoughts.
Everything we hear shapes what we do next.
4. THE FUNDRAISING
People were resonating with the idea. We knew we were on to something.
It was time to make it happen. Building a social platform requires investment, developers, and tools — which means fundraising. In the non-profit world, fundraising demands a huge amount of labor.
It’s no different for us. We took painstaking time to develop donation campaigns, forms, payment processing, and a fundraising shop to invite reciprocal contributions.
5. THE NON-PROFIT
Filing for official federal 501(c)(3) status is a crucial piece of this process.
Before an organization can become a registered non-profit, you need community buy-in, a Board of Directors, donations to cover filing fees, and legal support for all of the paperwork involved.
We’re getting closer every day!
Every non-profit you know of has been through this process (plus so much more — we can’t fit it all into one blog post!).
Much like spiritual practice, the art of founding a non-profit and social platform is a journey. It unfolds as an ongoing story - and we think it’s a beautiful one. We hope you’ve enjoyed taking a step back with us to appreciate it.
You are a precious part of this story. We can’t thank you enough for walking this road us.
For those who feel moved, we joyfully and gratefully accept contributions of time, talent, and treasure. Together, we’re making sacred sound practices more widely available & accessible than ever before.
